Abstract: This paper analyses the Roman water law defining water as a natural resource vital for proper working and functioning of the society. Subsequently, it deals with the notion of water in the medieval Hungarian law in terms of legal relations and, last but not least, analyses water as an object of the state strategic interests’ protection and covers the responsibilities of an individual and the state for the efficient, economical and sustainable use of water.
